Search engine optimization is a key and vital part to the life cycle of every website. Since Google and other search engines are constantly changing its search algorithm, SEO are forced to change their ideas and code to keep up with the search engine giants. One particular technique called “Black Hat SEO” was developed for webmasters and SEO experts who try to bait search engines into giving a website a higher SERP (Search Engine Ranking pages). However these old tricks no longer work, in fact they will now do you more harm than good. Before you decide to try these old tricks or hire someone to improve your SEO and SERP, you might want to make sure they are not doing these techniques.

Meta tags were one of the very first techniques that where used by search engines. The two Meta tags you will find on websites are “description” and “keywords”.

The description Meta tag is still used today by modern search engines, but people who are planning to use a description tag should maybe only insert one or at the very most two sentences in the code. Also the description should be carefully considered, since this is the part seen in the search engine results page or SERP. The description should basically only display an overview of the web page. Additionally, search engines do not always honor description Meta tags if the algorithm does detect valid text in the Meta tags. If this happens, the search engine will then just replace the description with other text with the website’s page itself.

The keyword tag is still used by some search engines, so it still has some limited use. However some webmasters cram keywords in Meta tags with dozens of phrases to increase index rank in search engines such as Google. Most modern search engines now do not include the keyword Meta tag in its algorithm, so cramming phrases into these Meta tags will not improve your SEO on bit, in fact in may instead get you penalized in the SERPs.

Creating multiple domains name for a better rank in search engines is another old trick used by webmasters. They would buy several domains to promote one business entity and interlink them together to increase pagerank and improve organize search results. However Google and other search engines will now penalize you for this and this practice is now commonly known as a “domain farm” A webmaster using a domain farm tries to saturate the search engines with dozens, so his websites will dominate the SERPs. The problem with this technique is now that search engines have now re-focused on unique and original content, and these domain farms are just replicas of the same site. This is another great way to get your website thrown in the sandbox. There is one particular time when this is acceptable to use multiple domains, and that is when you are trying to protect your domain. For instance let’s say the domain of your website is www.cigar.com, and you also own the domain www.cigars.com. Since this is the plural version on your website this is ok to use it. Also if you owned other extension on the domain name such are .net, .org . . . . co.uk, etc……. this would also be acceptable to use for you websites as well.
